Biochemical Methane Potential of a Biorefinery’s Process-Wastewater and its Components at Different Concentrations and Temperatures

A sustainable circular bioeconomy requires the side streams and byproducts of biorefineries to be assimilated into bioprocesses produce value-added products. The present study endeavored utilize such a byproduct generated during synthesis 5-hydroxymethylfurfural as potential feedstock for biogas production. For this purpose, biochemical methane tests full process-wastewater, its components (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, levulinic acid, glycolic acid), together with furfural’s metabolites (furfuryl alcohol furoic phenols (syringaldehyde, vanillin, phenol), were conducted at mesophilic thermophilic temperatures assess their biodegradability gas production kinetics. 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 g COD test added separately assays containing 35 mL inoculum. At lowest concentrations, components, other than exhibited stimulatory effect on 37 °C, whereas increased concentrations returned lower mean specific yield either temperature. similar component loads, outperformed measured yields. Components that impaired anaerobic process elevated phenol, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Poor degradation process-wastewater was deduced linked considerable share in governing overall characteristics. With excessive recalcitrant it is recommended use waste substrate plants operating moderate temperatures, but low rates.
